Damn it! I waited over ½ an hour for my ice tea. What kind of customer service is this and should I tip or not?
In Asia countries like Japan or Hong Kong, we are not required to tip at all. It is part of their service or is already included inside the bill, but living in the United States, it is frowned upon if you do not tip. People have been so accustom to receiving tips that their service might not be up to par. You tip at the salon, hotel, restaurants, grocery store, and the list goes on. How much do you generally tip?
I’m sure everyone reading this blog has had their share of bad service. Did you end up tipping that person or what did you do? My youngest brother, once had a really bad experience at a restaurant and thought that they did not deserve a tip, but wanted to make a joke out of it so he ended up putting a penny in the tray. Yup! One shining Lincoln went in.
I’ve mentioned this in my previous post that math is not my best subject. In fact, I still have a hard time adding/subtracting in my head so a good friend suggested that simplicity double the tax to get the tip amount.
Example —Spaghetti with Ice tea @ $15.99
Tax @ 5% 0.80
The tip would be $1.60. If they gave really good service, you can give them $2.00 or even 3. I have even seen people give more then the meal itself. It is strictly up to you.
As far as the bad service goes, I still tip, but maybe not that much. I’m too chicken to just leave a penny.
Your thoughts?

hey julie!
gotta agree with you, I still tip even if its bad service, but sometimes less than 10%. and probably never go back to the restaurant again!
Especially chinese own restaurant!! But some are good. =)
Yes. I agree with you, Jen. Sometimes because of the delicious food we put up with the bad service.
If it’s a really good restaurant, service is excellent and I’ve had no complaints etc, I usually tip £1 ($1.60). If service is average 50pence ($0.80). If the service charge comes with the bill… £/$0.00 :p
But in shops, grocery stores… No tip… We already pay 17.5% VAT for every single item we purchase.
I never tip if the service is bad – PB is even worst – donch give face one.. if service is bad. But for good services.. we tip heavily. Once we pooled like $30 for tips for a waitress .. who waited on our table of 8.
ohohoh and one more thing. hawaii only 5% tax on everything? lucky lucky, here is like 13% tax on everything. & Use to be 15% toooooo.
Jen — that was just an example to show everyone the method I used to calculate tip. On the Island of Oahu, the tip is 4.5% and on the neighbor islands, it is 4%. There are a few states in America without any sales tax — Oregon and Washington.
Wow! 13% sales tax. That’s steep.
@ MB — thanks for the comment. =)
@ Mei — Wow! 17.5% that’s crazy. It not a common thing to tip at the grocery stores or shop, but when I have a cart load of stuff especially those gallons of milk & OJ…..the poor baggage clerk help me bag it, carry the bags, and load it in my car. So I end up tipping a dollar. =)
